Guitarist Alex Nauman and percussionist Ron Coulter team up for a delightful set of improvised sketches in their newest release "Cloud Country." Seven tracks cover a remarkable amount of sonic territory, from purity and solace to downright putrid and evil, listeners will embark on a bizarre journey of experimental bebop, sound effects, noise, and converging melodies that often feel like a black hole folding in on itself.

Meadowlark

Alex Nauman Trio

In cart Not available Out of stock

Meadowlark is a heartfelt collection of Alex’s favorite original compositions, written over the past eight years. Best described as retro-tinged "surf jazz", listeners can expect dynamic compositions, dreamy textures, and adventurous improvisation inspired by the styles of Julian Lage and Bill Frisell.

The Music:

The music on this disc is a sonic representation of scientific data related to climate change across our planet. Several sections consist of musical interpretations of historic CO2 levels in our atmosphere. Others represent Antarctic ice mass over time or rainfall patterns across the United States. These field recordings have been edited down and arranged into a four-part orchestra suite by Bob Brown of Ships In Studios, based in Billings, Montana. This collaboration has been a time to reflect on universal themes of change, exploring both large scale geologic processes and today's current political and societal situations. All proceeds of the sales of this recording will be donated to climate change research.

The Orchestra:

The Billings Fringe Orchestra is a constantly evolving group of improvising musicians based across Montana. Our mission is to cross musical boundaries by bringing together players of all ages, skills, and genres to perform large-scale group improvisations as well as original compositions. The product of putting people from all walks of life together into a new (and sometimes uncomfortable) musical situation is an incredible ensemble playing new music which reaches an exciting space between total chaos and incredible beauty.

Billings Fringe Orchestra is: Anna Paige (flute), Emma Stannard (clarinet), Matt Austin (tenor saxophone), Jade Gjerde (french horn), Tony Hammond (trombone), MJ Williams (trombone), Peyton Ellis (accordion), Ryan Riley (percussion), Gina Anton (percussion), Luke Kestner (marina & piano), Nancy Owens (violin), Alex Nauman (acoustic bass), David Banuelos (electric bass), Nathaniel Smallwood mandolin), Bob Brown (electronic manipulation).

Recorded live June 4th, 2017 at Rocky Mountain College in Billings, MT

Never-ending thanks to everyone who has contributed time, money, skills, and support in ways both big and small to this project. Special thanks to Bob Brown for all the hard work and always believing in new music!
